Symbolism refers to Route 66 iconography and includes the number “66,” the road’s nicknames, the iconic black-and-white shield, and the diagonal course of the road. By exploring outside and inside of the existing roadside facilities, the project focuses on murals, photos, and other visual forms representing these markers and other symbolic forms such as historic photos of the properties or other symbolic elements to reveal how the contemporary road connects to its historic icons of the Route 66 era.
